Choose the order from your gateway
Start with where you enter Nepal and where you must finish. A traveller landing in Kathmandu has a different first day from a group driving from Gorakhpur through Sunauli. Neither needs to copy a standard round-trip package if that creates unnecessary backtracking.
Write the arrival point and final departure commitment at opposite ends of a simple itinerary. Place the destinations between them and count the transfer days. This makes the choice about actual travel time and priorities rather than which city appears first in a brochure.
When Kathmandu first is the clearer choice
If you arrive by air in Kathmandu, a valley stay can give the trip a straightforward opening. It creates space to settle in and visit the places you came to see before another road day. A pilgrimage focused on Pashupatinath or a family commitment in the valley can also make Kathmandu the natural first priority.
Choose actual visit areas rather than treating the whole valley as one attraction. Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur have distinct heritage areas. Name the sites that matter to your group and decide whether a local guide is wanted. Airport transport, a valley day and the next intercity journey are separate pieces of the plan.
When Pokhara first can suit the trip
A Gorakhpur-origin road journey may be planned around a Pokhara stay before continuing elsewhere, particularly when lakeside time or a trekking meeting is the main purpose. That does not make every Pokhara-first circuit automatically shorter; the return point and other destinations still matter.
Keep the first evening flexible after a cross-border drive. If a trek follows, confirm the city meeting date and the separate trailhead arrangement. A hotel drop in Pokhara is not a commitment to continue onto an unspecified mountain road. Include stored bags and equipment in the vehicle discussion.
Add Chitwan only when there is time to stay
Chitwan can form a third stay in a Kathmandu–Pokhara circuit, but it introduces another accommodation change and transfer. The value comes from time at the lodge and separately arranged activities, not from checking off the region's name during a drive.
Choose the lodge area before requesting transport. Sauraha and Meghauli are distinct visitor bases, so the accommodation pin belongs in the itinerary. Ask the lodge which activities need a fixed start and avoid tying the most important one to an uncertain intercity arrival.
Use Lumbini deliberately on a Gorakhpur circuit
Lumbini can be an important pilgrimage or heritage priority for a group entering through the Sunauli corridor. Give the visit time outside the vehicle and decide whether an overnight is appropriate. It should not be included merely because it appears convenient on a map.
If the trip is short, compare a focused Lumbini-and-Pokhara plan with a longer circuit that also reaches Kathmandu. Removing a destination can create a more useful stay day. The right answer depends on your purpose, not on maximising the number of towns printed in the quote.
Protect the final connection
If your exit is a Kathmandu flight, consider ending the intercity portion before the departure day. A private road vehicle cannot guarantee a connection against all traffic, weather or road disruptions. An overnight in the valley gives you a different margin from arriving after a long drive on flight day.
For a return to Gorakhpur, include the crossing and the final Indian address in the plan. A Nepal-side border drop is not the same service as a station transfer in Gorakhpur. Label Indian and Nepal meeting times clearly and avoid relying on an unverified border-processing duration.
Compare two complete itineraries
Ask for two versions with the same passengers, bags and main priorities: one starting with Kathmandu and one with Pokhara. Compare overnight locations, transfer days, local transport, final connection margin and the total quote. Do not compare only the first leg's price.
Choose the version that gives your priority experiences enough time and makes the final journey manageable. If both feel rushed, reduce the destination list or add a night. A useful private itinerary should explain what happens each day and what remains optional, without promising hotels, activities or vehicle availability that have not been confirmed.
